Possibly a /rant. Anyways.
Manual transmissions don't exactly mean safer, more attentive drivers. If it did, Brazil wouldn't register an average of 43 thousand deaths in traffic every year, roughly the same as 215 aerial tragedies:
Nós temos como 43 mil mortes no ano. Isso são como 215 aeronaves caindo no Brasil todos os anos. A maioria das mortes que acontecem no trânsito elas são causadas por falha humana.
The quote states what I just did, and goes even further to state that the vast majority of the accidents are caused by human error, and that's in a country where manual transmissions are the norm. Living in a state capital, I can relate several times where I was almost sideswiped, rear ended or bumped into because the other driver was checking his facebook. In a manual car. I often pass my colleagues on the wya back home in traffic and more often than not they wave at me with cell phone in hand, except for that one time where it was a beer bottle instead. I wish I was making this shit up.
So, anyways, maybe in a more cultured country, where people actually respect a minimum of common sense, manual transmissions could be an safety measure for better drivers, but if Brazil is any indication, don't hold your breath, it doesn't get a lot better.

Also, statistics are from 2012, so the most recent available. They will probably go up in 2013 by the way.
